So what are the differences?

Petrol Pinzgauers are more easily available as approx 20,000 were made, Diesels are rarer with aprox 6,000 ever made. With production starting in 1971 for the petrol, predominantly for the military, and 1985 for the diesel, and production ceasing in 2008.

Spares are readily available for both petrol and diesel vehicles. The 2.4 air cooled 4 cylinder petrol engine with a HP of 87, was developed by Puch, and the 2.4, 6 cylinder water cooled, turbo diesel engine with at least 110 HP, is a VW engine also used in VW vans and cars.

As a forward control vehicle, the engine access is from the central console between the driver and passenger seats in all models. The petrol models are capable of 18 - 20 mpg on the 4 x 4 models and 15 - 17 mpg on the 6 x 6 models.

The diesels are slightly more economical and are capable of up to 23 - 26 mpg. The petrol pinzgauer has drum brakes all round, manual steering, and hydrolically operated diff locks. The diesel has disc brakes all round with power steering and pneumatically operated diff locks.
